Beat Scientist / sound artist and groover organically combining jazz, hip hop and avant-garde.

To mark the tenth anniversary of the release of his groundbreaking album „In the Moment“, which established him as a leading figure in jazz and beat drumming, Makaya McCraven arrives with a new album on International Anthem.

The new album is the follow-up to his respected 2022 release „In These Times“ and features longtime collaborators Marquis Hill and Junius Paul along with new collaborators. On the album, McCraven continues to push his sound and stays true to his approach of reshaping and recontextualizing music in new and unexpected ways.

Makay's father is jazz drummer Stephen McCraven, his mother is Hungarian singer Agnes Zsigmondi. His multi-ethnic background proves to be an advantage in his quest for originality. At an early age, he was already jamming with his father's students and accompanying his mother in the performance of Jewish songs. Besides jazz and ethnic music, he listened to what most of his peers listened to – A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, Nas or Biggie. That's why his mix of jazz and hip hop sounds so organic today. Both styles are just in his blood. His groove remains solid and infectious, his sonic imagination boundless, his sense of composition extraordinary, his courage to explore new avenues fearless.

„McCraven's music has quietly and unobtrusively become one of the best and loudest affirmations of the vitality of the contemporary jazz scene.“
