The Caribbean archipelago of Guadeloupe is a former French colony, and the local Creole language, the mother tongue of singer Malika Tirolien, is a mix of African languages and French with an admixture of Caribbean, the language of the indigenous people, the Carib Indians. Malika grew up here in an artistic environment. Her grandmother played the piano, her grandfather was the poet Guy Tirolien. Malika showed an interest in music and singing at an early age, and her parents signed her up for piano lessons. In 2001, when she was 18 years old, Malika went to Canada to study music at the University of Montreal. From 2012 to 2013, Malika sang the lead role in a performance of the world famous "new circus " Cirque du Soleil. Her performance caught the attention of Michael League, leader of the American band Snarky Puppy, and Malika contributed to the Snarky Puppy Family Dinner album.

In June 2014 Malika released her first solo album, and in July she went on an international tour with Snarky Puppy, followed by tours in Europe, Brazil, and later China and India. In 2015, Michael League formed Bokanté from the members of Snarky Puppy and Malika became the lead singer. The line-up's second album, What Heat, was nominated in the World Music category at the Grammy Awards and featured a guest appearance by the renowned Dutch ensemble Metropole Orkest.
