The string ensemble MAOMAH was founded by double bassist Klára Pudláková as part of her master's project at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts (HAMU). Her aim is to develop classical music through improvisation and rhythmic freedom borrowed from jazz. Klára Pudláková's original compositions have a defined theme, but the musicians, who are well-versed in the art of improvisation, develop these themes differently each time, taking the music in new and unexpected directions. The resulting music, while reminiscent of Romantic or contemporary classical music in terms of instrumentation, has a certain “something” that is fundamentally different. This “something” is the “musical mystery” for which this musical army fights. All expression, dynamics, and the structure of the whole are governed not by written notation, but by the musicians' spontaneous reactions to one another in the moment. The ensemble, which combines classical virtuosity with jazz training and extensive experience in improvisation, is capable of adhering to the boundaries of given harmonies and rhythms, while simultaneously pushing beyond those boundaries without hesitation.

MAOMAH is a musical army fighting for mystery and hope. It’s hard to say exactly what is meant by “musical mystery.” Perhaps it is in its eternal incomprehensibility that hope lies—the hope that music will always be with us and for us. MAOMAH seeks this mystery through all available means, unafraid to wring out emotions in the most straightforward way, or to unleash wild, experimental freedom. However, the main path to the mystery is seen in the freedom that improvisation brings to music.

MAOMAH is led from the double bass by Klára Pudláková, and the three violinists providing different musically combative techniques are Jana Havláková, Anna Romanovská, and Milan Jakeš.
